Color Gets Sophisticated

Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 2:05pm | Color

For quite a while, bright colors have invaded our space. From clothing, to dishes to home décor, bright and bold was in. It was everywhere you looked. Not that I’m complaining; I love bright colors. They exude energy and liveliness. .But after a while, all this brightness and color, it does tend to become, shall we say, jarring?

In walking recent shows, I’ve been pleased to see a gradual shift back toward more muted tones. Not strictly beige and tan. How blasé that would be! There are still oranges and reds, soothing greens and a plethora of blues. One need only take a quick glance at the Sherwin Williams 2012 Color Wheel to see that. Fear not, my color loving friends, there is still plenty of color to play with, but it’s a sophisticated sister to the palette we’ve seen dominating for the last 12 months.

Perhaps some of our youthful exuberance has faded as we settle in for a longer haul in these economic times. Like our attitudes, our new color choices are not dull or morose, far from it. We, and our colors, are just a little older, a little wiser, a little calmer. We, and our colors, have become sophisticated.
